- Abstract
In this article, we examine the kinds of civic engagement to which girls are attracted, the models of leadership to which girls aspire, and the barriers they see to women's leadership. Specifically, we use a critical/cultural lens to analyze and unpack five popular culture textual interventions that promote political leadership to girls and young women--Barbie for President, CosmoGirl!'s Project 2024, Lifetime Networks' Future Frontrunners, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and American's Girl Collection's Julie Albright series books. These varied texts create a mediascape that serves to construct an environment through which girls come to understand the role of women in electoral politics. Thus, we explore what these media texts communicate to young women about presidential leadership and gender, the models of leadership invoked in these texts, and whether these models reflect what some girls tell us about their political aspirations. We also consider whether these interventions serve as effective tools for social change.
