- Title
"A Church of Himself ": Liberal Skepticism and Consistent Character in Bishop Blougram's Apology.
- Authors
Morton, Heather
- Abstract
The author reflects on the dramatic monologue "Bishop Blougram's Apology," by Robert Browning in terms of the similarity between this work and "Apologia Pro Vita Sua," written by John Henry Newman. The author also considers the effect that religion in England, particularly the fears over Catholic supremacy, had on Browning and Newman personally. Also examined is Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman, who has been supposed the model for the bishop.
