- Title
Surréalisme Sous-l'Eau: Science and Surrealism in the Early Films and Writings of Jean Painlevé.
- Authors
Fretz, Lauren E.
- Abstract
The article presents a profile of French filmmaker and writer Jean Painlevé and examines how the Surrealist art movement impacted the films he made about science and the natural world. It discusses how isolation in his childhood helped him to develop a love of the cinema and to study to become a biologist and mentions that he forged personal contacts with Surrealists such as Jacques Boiffard, Eli Lotar, and Ivan Goll through the family of his wife Geneviève Harmon. It also explores how Painlevé addressed contradictory issues related to science and art in his films including "La Pieuvre" (The Octopus), "La Daphnia" (The Water Flea), and "L'hippocampe" (The Seahorse).
