- Abstract
Researchers S.H. Kennedy et al., conducted a single-blind comparison of lithium augmentation (LA) and cognitive therapy (CT) in patients with partial response to the maximum tolerated dose of an antidepressant agent. All subjects were initially diagnosed with a major depressive episode (MDE) according to DSM-IV criteria, had a score of at least 16 on the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale (HAM-D-17) for Depression and had experienced at least one prior MDE. After being treated with moclobemide, paroxetine, sertraline or venlafaxine for eight weeks, patients were classified according to their HAM-D-17 scores as remitters, partial responders and non responders. The researchers note that although there were no significant differences found between groups during treatment, the proportion of remitters in both groups was similar to that found in a study comparing venlafaxine to SSRIs. They also suggested that the difference between LA and CT at the four-weekfollow up may have meant that the treatment period was too shortand the follow up was conducted too soon.
