- Abstract
The article presents several letters to the editor that are published in earlier issues of the journal "Public Relations Quarterly." In response to Bill Brody's article on the Public Relations Society of America's professional progression, President of Public Relations Society of America, H.J. Dalton, wrote that Brody's argument that the point of the maintenance of Accreditation program has substituted the appearance of professionalism for the reality itself, lacks substance. Enactment of the maintenance program--part of the professional progression whose capstone is admission to the College of Fellows--came after four years of thorough study and discussion at every level of the Society. Substantial grassroots input produced the consensus that made it possible for maintenance to be adopted. The primary purpose of the program is to encourage members to stay current with developments in the field. It further reports that if the Society wants its members to be perceived as professionals, the organization first must require that all conform to professional standards.
