- Abstract
Ajit S. Bhalla's book, "National and Global Responses to the Covid‐19 Pandemic: Do Leaders Matter?", examines different countries' responses to the pandemic, with a focus on political leadership. Bhalla argues that the performance of the Boris Johnson-led Conservative government in the UK was a failure, citing factors such as "impossible flip-flopping" and "chaos as usual" in Downing Street. Bhalla also highlights the success of female leaders, such as Jacinda Ardern and Angela Merkel, in handling the pandemic. Additionally, Bhalla notes that countries in Asia and the Pacific, as well as communist states like China and Cuba, had better control of the virus compared to Western democracies and countries led by populist "strongmen". However, Bhalla's indulgence of China's handling of the virus and criticism of the Biden administration's approach to investigating the origins of the virus are seen as problematic. Overall, Bhalla concludes that committed political leadership, along with scientific and medical expertise, is crucial in effectively combating a pandemic.
