- Abstract
The article discusses the role that merchant firms played in bringing aspects of modernity to the borderlands of Yunnan Province, Southwest China from 1800 through 1920, including to Heshun village, China. The impact that trade in Southwest China had on the social conditions of the region, including in regard to gender roles and consumption, is discussed.
