- Abstract
The article reports on the role and influence that the philosophies and works of a grain shop owner from the Qing dynasty called Tao Xu had on social problems, local elite identity and conflict which was seen during and after the Taiping occupation of Jiangnan, China between 1860 and 1884. A discussion of the social impact of Tao Xue's most well known book, "Zhue," which is translated into Engish as "Inquiry Into Rents,' and was first published in 1884, is presented. Tao Xu's perspectives on the Taiping occupation are examined.
