- Abstract
This article discusses the importance of molecular pathology in cancer diagnosis and therapy. It highlights the use of advanced molecular techniques, such as Next Generation sequencing (NGS), in assessing genetic alterations and biomarkers in various types of cancer. The article also explores the emerging field of cancer-agnostic precision oncology, which aims to target specific genetic alterations in tumors regardless of the cancer type. Additionally, the article discusses the role of molecular pathology in the diagnosis and classification of central nervous system tumors, lymphomas, melanoma, head and neck tumors, lung cancers, breast diseases, liver and pancreatic tumors, colorectal cancer, endocrine tumors, renal cancer, tubo-ovarian and endometrial cancers, soft tissue and bone tumors, and cancers of unknown origin. The authors emphasize the need for collaboration between pathologists, oncologists, molecular biologists, and data scientists to effectively implement molecular pathology in cancer treatment. However, challenges such as technological requirements, cost, and expertise needed for interpretation still exist. The article concludes by highlighting the importance of equitable access to molecular tests for all populations.
