- Abstract
The article presents information on the sensitivity of the sperm cell tests with sea urchin to organic and inorganic compounds found in marine ecosystem in Chile. Results indicated that in general the sea urchin fertilization test is especially sensitive to metals due to the effect of excess cation on sperm mobility. The test has several important advantages that make it a useful tool in the environmental monitoring of Chilean coastal habitats. This is because of the short duration of tests, sensitivity to several toxicants, requires small amounts of test water, can be used year-round and the study was based on a specie present along most of the Chilean coastline.
