- Title
Introduction: Contestation over the Mining Boom in Africa.
- Authors
Engels, Bettina
- Abstract
Burkina Faso therefore reflects the global trend where almost everywhere that artisanal mining is practiced to a significant degree, it has expanded alongside large-scale mining. Access to land for artisanal mining has been considerably limited by state policies that directly or indirectly grant priority to industrial mining. Contestation between large-scale mining on the one hand, and artisanal and small-scale mining on the other presents the main line of conflict, which is hardly surprising given that millions of people in West African rural zones essentially depend on artisanal mining for their livelihood. Whereas industrial mining ousts artisanal mining in general, changing technical practices, namely cyanidation, in artisanal mining holds women back.
