FAMILY CHOICE: THE NEXT STEP IN THE QUEST FOR EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY?
- Authors
SUGARMAN, STEPHEN D.
- Abstract
The article discusses the practice of family choice in providing greater educational opportunities for children. Defined as letting parents decide where and what their children learn, advocates claim this could improve a child's learning. Another option is voucher learning, where parents are given a stipend to educate their children at home, according to mandated guidelines. Opponents claim children may be disadvantaged by their lack of socialization, as well as the inadequacy of their parents. Experiments on other systems, are reportedly ongoing.
