- Abstract
Between 1683 and 1702, inquisitorial authorities in Santa Cruz de Mompos recorded more than seventy accusations against Doña María Ortiz Nieto, a Creole landowner from the region's elite. She was charged for heretical, scandalous and blasphemous propositions, and for having sealed a pact with the Devil, which did not result in a faith trial as her accusers expected. In this article, I contend that the testimonies document both changes in her alleged heterodox behavior and transformations in the implementation of her cruelty, all of which signal her aging process. Moreover, the experiences and circumstances indicating a reduction in her functionality, such as the delegation of punishments to her trusted men and her addiction to alcohol, reveal her transition to old age. However, such a reduction did not mean a decrease in her power. Instead, it proved the extent to which she modified her strategies to keep control over her land.
