- Abstract
The Brazilian prison system presents factors that can aggravate the health conditions, including mental, of people deprived of liberty and prison servers. The aim of this study was describing and comparing the sociodemographic, clinical and health characteristics of penitentiary servers and people deprived of liberty in two small prisons. This is a cross-sectional study approved by the Ethics Committee, Opinion N. 4.973.589. As results, it appears that most of both groups are male. Among the prisoners, there are smokers and 20.8% do not expose themselves to the sun, in addition to making use of medications such as analgesics and anti-inflammatories. The servers used only painkillers. Both groups use alcohol, have intestinal problems and do physical activity regularly. Regarding the physical symptoms most presented in both groups are: headaches and stomach, sleep poorly and tire easily. Already the symptom of nervousness was reported in both groups and sadness by 70.8% of people deprived of liberty. It is understood that these results are related to the characteristics of the institution; one, by the fact of being reclusive, and the other, by the labor activity of extreme attention and wakefulness. Thus, recognizing the profile of those who live in the prison system is necessary to plan care for these subjects.
