- Abstract
The article discusses works on Puritan studies. In the twenty years since sociologist Perry Miller's death there have been many new beginnings in the field he inspired. The world has witnessed an impressive recovery of the Puritans' gift for metaphoric adventure, and a number of town and family studies have given a fuller sense of Puritan life "from the bottom up." Anyone who hopes at the present moment to make a contribution to Puritan studies should be willing to root his commitment very firmly in the Emersonian conviction that "each age, must write its own books."
