- Abstract
The study examines the information role of the Kuwaiti Diwaniyyah in terms of its type, size, and nature, and the importance of information people obtain during their visits to the Diwaniyyah as an unofficial information agency. A sample of 640 Kuwaiti male Diwaniyyah visitors (ages from 18-78 years) was selected for the study. The survey research method was used and data were collected by using questionnaires. This included some demographic variables and some data concerning the different types of Diwaniyyahs in Kuwait. Validity and reliability for these scales is measured, and SPSS was used for data entry and analysis (Version, 17). T-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation and Regression were used for the major statistical analysis. The key findings were: social and political information which were the most popular types of information discussed and exchanged in the Diwaniyyah in Kuwaiti society. People who owned Diwaniyyahs believed that it was important in Kuwaiti society and that it played an important information role. The Diwaniyyah was one of the most important sources of information compared with other media. Data also showed that respondents who visited entertainment Diwaniyyahs had the lowest mean in importance of the Diwaniyyah to society and the importance of information compared with others who visited discussions Diwaniyyahs. Data showed significant relationships between important information that can be obtained from the Diwaniyyah and the importance of the Diwaniyyah, the importance of Diwaniyyah visits, the average number of Diwaniyyahs visited per week, the average number of days per week to visit the Diwaniyyah, and the average number of weekly visitors to the Diwaniyyah.
