- Abstract
The sample consisted of 78 women in the age range of 18-50 drawn from various sub-strata of the general population in Peshawar. An assortment of psycho-social variables was subjected to study, which included age, depression, life stress, anxiety, and personality. Analysis of the data led to the conclusions that there is a strong psycho-social basis for the various symptoms of premenstrual distress in women with premenstrual syndrome. A comparison group of age-matched normal women (N = 28) with no symptoms of PMS were evaluated and compared with women with PMS on personality test called "Sixteen Personality Factor" (16 PF) and "Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS)." The scores on DASS were significantly higher for PMS on all three dimensions of DASS. Elevations of the aggression as assessed by the 16PF significantly correlated with premenstrual depression and physical aches. Women with PMS were found emotionally unstable, sensitive, serious, less imaginative, socially clumsy, apprehensive, and tensed. Whereas, other dimensions including, Factor B (Reasoning), G (Conscientious), L (Vigilance), M (Abstractness), Q1 (Conservatism), Q2 (Self reliance) and Q3 (Perfectionism) were modestly correlated. Further research employing other assessment methods is needed to confirm these findings.
