- Abstract
This paper studies the nominal phrase (NP) encoding, particularly in texts of the news genre. Our main objective is to analyze, considering the principles of iconicity and informativity, forms of the NP and its possible correlation with semantic-cognitive and discursive-pragmatic factors. The study finds theoretical and methodological support in Usage-based Functional Linguistics. Methodologically, this study is based on deductive reasoning and is qualitative and quantitative. The corpus consisted of 20 news, whose focus was the campaign of the main candidates for the Presidency of the Republic in 2022: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Jair Messias Bolsonaro. 264 noun phrases were analyzed. The results reveal that there is a broad preference for lexical NPs, as they better suit the genre's purposes. Observing the extension of these NPs, the results indicate a higher frequency of minimal NPs, since the referents are widely known. We observed that the informational status of the referent is crucial for its encoding in the discourse, since more extensive NPs tend to appear when the referent is new information in the discourse, while smaller NPs are identified in cases of informational status given/evoked/available or inferable. In this way, the study shows that the NP structure is closely linked to semantic-cognitive and discursive-pragmatic factors, proving the functionalist premise that there is a strong correlation between form and function.
