- Abstract
The author claims that the use of biographies of missionaries and mission thinkers is crucial in the study of the history of Christian missions in the modern missionary movement. He notes that most biographies of missionaries are a form of hagiography, which was defined by Alan Neely as the account of a missionary's life that has been idealized, hiding the person's failures and mistakes. It was said that hagiographies fail to achieve their aim of promoting the cause of mission. The biographies by Gerald H. Anderson are cited for not being hagiographical.
