- Abstract
Human ambitions and limits on the issues of life and death open an eternal dilemma. In the example of the text of Chapter 74 of the Dao De Jing (in the Mawangdui version), this dilemma is reiterated, including an apt illustration of the never-ending Ikarian desire to “be like gods”. The presented anthropological interpretation of the text goes away from the common concept of interpreting Dao De Jing at the level of consecrating councils to rulers, and opens the existential dimension of a problem that has a far-reaching human reach. The Old Master (老子 Laozi) here, as in many other chapters of the Dao De Jing, raises the question of the human destiny framed by our birth and then of death, given by the office of Heaven. And it is presumed that both of these external assumptions of human destiny should be demolished. The Old Master’s warning then sounds like a major memento at a time when world agencies reported in November 2018 that Chinese scientist He Jiankui 贺建奎 made an indelible record in genetics history by applying the so-called CRISPR method of human DNA cuts in embryos. Obviously, the author of the Dao De Jing would not raise his hand for either eugenics or euthanasia.
