- Abstract
The short novel as a literary genre has its origins in the Middle Ages, where it is very close to the anecdote, the jocular and sometimes obscene, and also, intimately linked to the oral tradition, as it was read in front of an audience. This makes this discursive typology an ideal place for exchange between the sender and the receiver of the story, the audience. Hence the importance of dialogue in novels. This internal dialogic character also goes beyond the margins of the work and is also shown in the preface or paratext, which shows the author's direct intentions. We propose here a diachronic study of the French short novel, focusing mainly on the paratext and transtextual relations in Cent Nouvelles nouvelles, L'Heptaméron, Les Nouvelles Françaises and Les Nouvelles héroïques et amoureuses.
