- Abstract
This article presents information on non surgical abortion method. According to the results of a randomized controlled trial of the efficacy of the approach, 90% of patients who received an intramuscular injection of methdtrexate, followed three days later by vaginal administration of misoprostol, had a complete abortion. Vaginal administration of the same dose of misoprostol without nethotrexate was significantly less effective, with 47% of patients having a complete abortion. Side effects from methotrexate, which is commonly used to treat a variety of cancers, appeared to be minimal. The study included 61 women who were 18 years of age or older and seeking an abortion. Participation was limited to women pregnant for 56 days of gestation or less. Participants had to agree to abstain from intercourse and alcohol for the first 14 days of the study and to undergo a suction abor- tion if the pregnancy was still viable two weeks after the trial began. Women were excluded from participating in the study if they used any medication that might counteract the effects of methotrexate or misoprostol or if they had a physical condition that might predispose them to an increased risk of complications.
