Khat, driver impairment and road traffic injuries: a view from Ethiopia.
- Authors
Eckersley, William; Salmon, Ruth; Gebru, Mulugeta
- Abstract
The article discusses research on traffic accidents said to be neglected in developing countries. It focuses on the chewing of the stimulant Catha edulis, or Khat leaf by drivers in Ethiopia and its possible correlation with traffic accidents. It notes traffic fatality data for Ethiopia reported by the Ethiopian National Road Safety Coordination Office. Though driver error is thought to account for most accidents, they are rarely attributed to driver impairment. Khat's amphetamine-like chemical structure is noted. Surveys of drivers, pedestrians, and traffic police are discussed.
