- Authors
Burke, Eric Michael
- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of republicanism in southern Illinois, colloquially known as "Egypt," near the end of the antebellum period, specifically between 1854 and 1861. It examines the popular and intellectual portrayal of southern Illinois as it related to pro-slavery, anti-African American sentiment, the ideology of the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, and sentiment concerning what is referred to as a white South following abolition.
