- Abstract
Emphysematous pyelonephritis is a serious complication of upper urinary tract infection. It is common in females and in diabetics. It is usually unilateral, but bilateral involvement may occur. Escherichia coli is the leading causative organism. As it is life-threatening, prompt diagnosis and intervention are necessary. Imaging examinations are essential to establish the diagnosis. Computed tomography has been found to be a useful imaging modality in the evaluation of the diagnosis and extent of emphysematous pyelonephritis. Treatment of emphysematous pyelonephritis includes systemic antibiotics, percutaneous drainage, nephrectomy, or a combination of these treatment methods.
