- Abstract
This article focuses on a pilot study evaluating tobacco education classes developed by communities in the U.S. known as tobacco diversion program. The program is offered in lieu of, or in addition to, other penalties for youths cited for tobacco use. Interviews with 112 adolescents, consisting of a group whose parents granted permission and a group cited during the period, were completed from January to July 1999. Only minor differences were observed between the two groups in tobacco use and readiness to quit at three months. The active implementation of laws focused at the possession of tobacco by youths and incentives linked with diversion to a tobacco education program have the potential for reaching large numbers of smoking youths.
