- Title
Automation speeds plate forming for destroyer hulls.
- Abstract
The article focuses on a prototype system that is being developed for an automated thermal plate forming process. Complex hull curvatures now require a combination of mechanical and thermal inputs to form hull plates. These applications require heavy reliance on operator skill and experience. The plan calls for the construction and integration of a prototype automated thermal plate system that can process plates within a 12-foot wide by 20-foot long by 3- foot high working envelope. The system must include plate holding, induction heating and quenching, path planning, automated measurement, and heating and cooling manipulation systems.
