- Abstract
The article discusses the role of French General, and later President, Charles de Gaulle in French history. The author argues that the post-2007 period, which coincided with the election of Nicholas Sarkozy to the French Presidency, marked a turning point in French history. The role that De Gaulle had in the political construction of France's Fifth Republic is cited as a key aspect of his legacy. The ways that De Gaulle's legacy has impacted French governmental organizations, culture and politics is described. The author describes various lieux de mémoire and discusses these historical sites such as Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, France, where De Gaulle lived, and London England's Carlton Gardens, where De Gaulle led the French Resistance movement.
