- Title
BIGGEST ON THE BLOCK: CONTEMPORARY CHINESE OIL PAINTING AT CHINA GUARDIAN.
- Authors
Cohn, Don J.
- Abstract
The article features the art auction house China Guardian Auctions founded in 1993 by Wang Yannan, the daughter of the late Chinese vice premier Zhao Ziyang. The company sold a total of $5.9 million in July 2005 compared to Sotheby's. During the late 1970s, the market for Chinese oil paintings remained primarily under the influence of Westerners living in the country due to the reestablishment of art academies. The auction house performs the dealer's role by setting standards and prices, introducing painters to galleries and marketing art.
