- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Most severe cases of metabolic acidosis are caused by lactic acid or ketones (diabetic ketoacidosis), and to a lesser extent by methanol, ethylene glycol, salicylates, and drugs such as metformin. CLINICAL CASES: This paper reports two clinical cases (a 70-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man) with lactic acidosis by metformin. CONCLUSIONS: Lactic acidosis by metformin is a complication of treatment in diabetic patients, highlighting the importance of replacement therapy as a treatment and that of an early diagnosis.
