- Abstract
Volunteer Tourism is an innovation and is one of the fastest growing tourism niche markets. We now see a desire to invest in order to do good. This form of travel, that combines traditional leisure activities with organized volunteering opportunities, has not been explored a lot. The aim of this article is thus to study the reasons and motivation that lead people to do (or not do) this type of tourism. We performed a survey, which obtained 300 responses, in October-November 2019. In accordance with the data from the survey we see a desire to do humanitarian work. However, the preference of the respondents to go abroad, instead of staying in Portugal, may not be possible, as the price people are willing to pay does not coincide with their destination preference. Volunteer tourism within Portugal, thus helping the country resolve its social and humanitarian problems should be considered as these problems exist worldwide, whether the country is developed or developing. Of the respondents who were not interested in doing volunteer tourism (about 23% of the sample), about 75% of these would not change their minds even if they were paid for their efforts. We also conclude that there should be a greater sensitization about these themes and activities. Chi-square tests were also performed, but the null hypothesis was confirmed in both cases. We may conclude that there seems to be gender equality regarding having participated in a volunteering action and regarding the intention to go on a Volunteer Tourism trip.
