- Abstract
This article is a book review of "Un geograf francez și România: Emmanuel de Martonne (1873-1955)" by Gavin Bowd. The book explores the life and work of Emmanuel de Martonne, a French geographer who had a strong connection to Romania. The review highlights de Martonne's contributions to the field of geography and his involvement in Romanian politics, particularly in defending the new frontiers of Greater Romania against revisionism. The review also discusses the author's perspective on de Martonne's work and its relationship to politics and history. The text also discusses the work of Gavin Bowd, who explores the birth and development of Romanian geopolitics. The author focuses on the Romanian school of geopolitics and its orientations towards the German and French schools during the interwar period. Bowd also examines the impact of political and military events during World War II and the postwar period, particularly Romania's entry into the Soviet sphere of influence. The text highlights the rehabilitation of geography and geopolitics in Romania, as well as the improvement of French-Romanian exchanges in the later years. Overall, the text provides a comprehensive analysis of the complex relationship between Romanian geography and geopolitics throughout the twentieth century.
