- Abstract
The article offers information on the first Jewish settlers in various parts of Southeast Texas. In Gonzales, the 1850s and 1860s saw the arrival of first Jewish settlers. Prominent families were the Stahls, the Gurinskys, the Fortgotstons, and the Michelsons. Its small Jewish population was attributed by the author as the main reason why a synagogue was never built in Gonzales. The first Jewish settlers reached Navasota in the 1860s. Jewish settlers include I. D. Cohen, his wife Mary Levy, B. Goodman, Myer Levy, Simon Levy, Sol Levy, I. Bock, H. Mayman, Charles Miller, and George Goldberg. The early 20th century witnessed the settlement of Jewish families in Bay City. A synagogue and religious school was in the town of Wharton.
