- Authors
Stern, Norton B.
- Abstract
The article presents an account of the violence that occurred in August 1856 between Jewish clothing merchants Samuel Kozminsky and Bernard Nathan over an application of the tradition of charity or tzedakah in Rough and Ready in Nevada, published in the September 5, 1856 issue of the "Nevada Journal." They traveled to Nevada to see the damages incurred by the business section in the city after being hit by a fire. The issue in the fight was the amount of 24 U.S. dollars, given as assistance by Nathan to a man who lost everything in the conflagration. A quarrel ensued when Kozminsky asked for half of the amount, saying he was willing to contribute the same for the good work. It was believed that Nathan was fined for breaking the peace, and they both left the place after the incident.
