- Abstract
The article focuses on the role of college professor and engineer John Mason Young in the development of the College of Hawaii and to his contribution to the agricultural, commercial, and military development of the region. It notes that Young was asked by Dr. John Gilmore, president of the College of Hawaii, to teach in addition to devising a drainage system for the area. It also states that Young established the Pacific Engineering Company, Ltd. in Hawaii. It notes the struggles of Young to maintain the balance between his professorship and private business.
