- Abstract
The book "Värden att värna" by Mattias Legnér examines the significance of monument protection and cultural heritage in the Nordic countries during World War II. The author primarily focuses on Sweden but also discusses Finland, Denmark, and Norway. It is shown that the protection of cultural assets was considered a state and national responsibility, and various measures were taken to safeguard artworks and historical objects. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of monument and cultural asset protection during World War II in the Nordic countries and also addresses the looting of artworks and the interaction between Nordic museum staff and German actors. It is suggested to create a summary in English to make the findings accessible beyond Sweden as well.
