- Abstract
This article examines the Israeli response to a catastrophic event known as "Black Shabbat" that occurred on October 7, 2023. The author explores the use of analogies and historical precedents to understand and cope with the tragedy, comparing it to past catastrophes in Jewish history. The article emphasizes the trauma experienced by Israelis and the impact on their sense of agency, as well as the mobilization of resources and innovative approaches to aid the war effort. It also discusses the significance of the event in shaping Israeli identity and responses to historical catastrophes. Additionally, the article discusses the response of the Jewish community to a hostage situation in Gaza, where protests and various tactics, such as distributing "Kidnapped" posters, are being used to bring attention to the hostages. Symbolism, like setting an empty seat at the Shabbat table, is also explored as a representation of the captives' plight. The article further delves into the use of parody and satire as coping mechanisms for the trauma. Overall, the article highlights the diverse ways in which the Jewish community is responding to the crisis and the impact it has had on Jewish culture and identity.
