- Title
Chagall's Jew in Bright Red.
- Authors
Rajner, Mirjam
- Abstract
The article examines the painting of artist Marc Chagall that depicts a traditional East European Jew seated in front of a wooden rural house. It cites that the Hebrew biblical verses inscribed in the semicircular form in the background seem to strengthen the specifically Jewish atmosphere. According to the article, the red color spread in the painting over the houses and the Jew's beard resembles flames, pointing to the unfortunate times of war and destruction. Moreover, it states that a photograph of a poverty-sticken, disheveled Jew inspired Chagall to create the painting.
