- Abstract
Debt Collective, a movement that emerged in 2014, aims to use collective debt resistance as a tool for societal transformation. By organizing debtors against their creditors, debtors' unions can build collective power to make demands and challenge unjust debts. This concept has historical roots, as ancient Roman plebeians used similar tactics to win concessions from the aristocratic class. Debt resistance campaigns have the potential to address various types of debt, such as medical debt, credit card debt, student debt, and debts associated with the criminal punishment system. Debt Collective has already abolished close to $180 billion in student debt, medical debt, and carceral debt, and has helped tenants fight evictions. The movement has also brought student debt cancellation to the forefront of national politics and elections. Debt Collective recognizes that debt is not just an individual burden, but a product of systemic exploitation and wealth accumulation. By organizing debtors, the movement aims to bring millions of people into the struggle for economic justice.
