- Abstract
The book "Democratic Culture of Debate in Times of Political Polarization" by Joachim Detjen examines the increasing polarization in German society. Detjen emphasizes the positive functions of arguing and the importance of freedom of speech for political debates. Identity conflicts, in particular, contribute to the fragmentation and polarization of society. The polarization is reinforced by populist tendencies characterized by anti-pluralism, a dichotomous worldview, simplifications, and a readiness for outrage. Detjen emphasizes the necessity of a democratic culture of debate based on non-violence, mutual recognition, and plurality. The book offers interdisciplinary perspectives and enables a better assessment of current events.
