- Abstract
"The Death of Public School: How Conservatives Won the War Over Education in America" by Cara Fitzpatrick is a book that explores the history of the privatization of the American education system. The book argues that conservatives were able to gain control of education policy by using a civil rights narrative that appealed to various interest groups. This narrative combined appeals for religious, racial, and economic freedoms, allowing conservatives to pursue their own agenda while appearing bipartisan. The book also discusses the influence of economist Milton Friedman's philosophy of education vouchers and the alliance between segregationists and Catholics seeking state support for parochial schools. The author concludes that conservatives ultimately gained control of education policy in America through their use of a multifaceted civil rights narrative.
