- Abstract
An article on Catholic and Jewish canon law on charging interest when lending money is presented. The author draws on the Hebrew and Christian bibles, as well as rabbinical literature for examples of the similarities of their respective laws governing usury, especially as it pertains to profiting from a person or group in distress. The existence of certain years of forgiveness for outstanding debts in the Jewish canon is discussed, as are the goals of these laws in promoting and maintaining social order.
