Dowd, Elsbeth L.
- Abstract
As Caddo archeology in southeastern Oklahoma undergoes a period of rejuvenation, archeologists must re-examine collections from earlier excavations. This study uses a hierarchical classification system to identify the regional variation of pottery styles in southeastern Oklahoma based on four assemblages of 139 whole vessels. The hierarchical classification encompasses form, decorative class, and decorative variety. Together with modal analysis of attributes and variables, it is used to analyze inter-assemblage variation. Identifying and analyzing regional variation is the first step towards creating a refined pottery seriation for southeastern Oklahoma, in order to set the stage for future research on the archeological history of the Caddo people.
