- Abstract
The article examines biographical reasons for video game addiction. The authors present the results of narrative biographical interviews with three video game addicts in Germany, who include a Taiwanese-German man who has experienced a childhood marked by multiple moves between and within the two countries, a young woman exploited as an au pair nanny in Ireland, and a Chilean immigrant who had fled the military dictatorship in his home country. Various explanations for computer game addiction are discussed, including compensation for perceived gaps in real-world accomplishments, escape from real-world problems, and reenactment and repetition of biographical experiences.
