- Abstract
A team from the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) presented a patented technology called Multi-Functional Sorbent Technology (MUST) at the 2024 Spring Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. MUST is a versatile sorbent that can remove critical and heavy metals from wastewater more effectively than activated carbon, and it is also more cost-effective. The sorbent has been successful in removing metals from various water sources and is expected to be effective in removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Fortera Corp. has commercialized a cement production process that reduces CO2 emissions by 70% and can be blended with conventional cement or used on its own. The process captures CO2 emitted during cement production and mineralizes it into CaCO3 in the cement mix. The resulting "green" cement has the same strength and durability as ordinary cement and will be available for ready-mix suppliers this summer. BASF, SABIC, and Linde Engineering have inaugurated the world's first demonstration plant for large-scale electrically heated steam-cracking furnaces. The plant, located at BASF's Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, produces olefins and tests two different heating concepts: direct heating and indirect heating.
