- Title
Environmental Issues during the French Revolution: Peasants, Politics and Village Common Land.
- Authors
PLACK, NOELLE
- Abstract
The article discusses the environmental history of the French Revolution, in particular laws passed regarding common lands, and other effects in rural areas. Previous environmental historiography of the Revolution is seen as focusing overmuch on the destruction of forests by the peasantry after the collapse of monarchical authority. A 1793 law allowing for the partition of village commons if approved by a local vote is discussed, with an examination of its impact on agriculture in the department of Gard and more broadly.
