- Authors
Bunis, David M.
- Abstract
This article discusses a study which documented the simultaneous existence in the early modern spoken Judezmo language of variation based upon socioeconomic and professional class, gender and age, and outlined the principle features of its major types. Sephardim have been employing Judezmo as a written language for over five centuries but it was not until the latter part of the language's Early Modern period that Judezmo writers began to attempt portrayals of the everyday speech of many sectors of Eastern Sephardic society. The study relied primarily on material drawn from native periodicals. The study has succeeded in underscoring the importance of the Judezmo press as a source of data on Early Modern Judezmo.
