- Title
Hunting the Human Animal: The Art of Ethical Perception in "Higher Laws."
- Authors
Mayer, Nancy
- Abstract
Presents literary criticism of a chapter from the book "Walden" titled "Higher Laws," which presents writer Henry David Thoreau's perspectives on the moral and ethical aspects of eating animals. The author suggests that Thoreau's approach, while interesting, is not as practical as modern-day approaches. She addresses Thoreau's perspective on the ethics and aesthetics of perception, in which he viewed the natural world as a transcendent system that both includes and excludes humans.
