- Title
Speech act adverbial clauses: The case of conditional jeśli-clauses in Polish.
- Authors
Jędrzejowski, Łukasz
- Abstract
The article examines the syntax of speech act adverbial clauses in Polish, particularly conditional clauses with the complementizer "jeśli" (if). It is argued that these clauses differ from hypothetical/content conditional clauses and are attached outside the matrix sentence structure. Ten characteristics and differences between conditional clauses are identified, which relate to content and speech act level. Furthermore, the internal structure of these clauses is examined. It is determined that they extend up to the JP projection and can also contain epistemic and evidential expressions. It is also shown that conditional clauses can have both finite and non-finite forms and can be in the past tense.
