- Title
Memory and Artifact, History and Character in the Novels of Gerald Szyszkowitz.
- Authors
McVeigh, Joseph
- Abstract
The article examines how Austrian novelists Gerald Szyszkowitz's "Thaya-trilogy" and "Puntigam oder die Kunst des Vergessens" frame the question of how historical and regional consciousness contribute to the creation of individual or group identity from two disparate starting points. While the novels of the trilogy explore the positive, identity-building aspects of memory and its objects, "Puntigam" focuses on the problematic nature of memory and the suppression of historical consciousness.
